FAQ-Frequently asked questions.
Q. What is ECU re-mapping?
A. The most difficult concept to grasp for most people is that re-mapping is merely engine tuning, albeit that it's being done electronically rather than mechanically (as in the old days of carburetters and distributors). A chip is simply an electronic storage device which is located on a circuit board inside the E.C.U.(the Engine Control Unit). The chip contains values in a binary form which the E.C.U's main processor (another device on the same circuit board) can understand and use to control the engine. Each value inside the chip is held in its own separate position (known as an 'address'), and when a car is re-mapped, what we are basically doing is altering the values at the groups of addresses that control fuelling, ignition timing and on turbo engines, turbo boost. These are known as maps, hence the often-used term 're-mapping'. It is these maps which we massage in order to tune the engine.
Q. How is it done?
A. The first job to do when a new E.C.U. type arrives at Just VW Audi Peformance is for the chip content to be read and stored on a PC. Then, using a combination of in-house software, in-depth experience of engine management software, and processor instruction sets the maps of interest are identified. Our engine analyser, serial data stream reader and a real-time in-circuit emulator are then used to rewrite the map contents to achieve the required results.
Q. Why re-map at all?
A. E.C.U's (Engine Control Units) were first introduced back in the 1980's as a supposedly more efficient method of controlling engine fuelling, ignition timing, and emissions. The problem lies in the fact that all new cars have to undergo 'Type Approval', and part of this is getting the car through the 'Urban Driving Cycle' tests. Remote from European driving conditions as they are (the tests are based on a simulated trip around Los Angeles with the resulting noxious gases collected in a bag for testing), car manufacturers had no option but to comply. In order to meet the stringent requirements, engines are virtually detuned to pass the test. As a result the car never performs as well as its mechanically controlled counterpart, with hesitancy and flat spots thrown in for good measure. This leaves masses of room for a creative engineer to re-tune for vastly improved performance, and without infringing any emissions regulations.
Q. How will the remap affect my warranty?
A. Contrary to popular statements no one can say 100% that the remap will be undetectable. The modification to the software shouldn't show up on main dealer diagnostic equipment and therefore unless you tell them that it has been done, they will be none the wiser.
Q. How will the remap affect my fuel consumption?
A. Depending on what your requirements are and your driving style depends on what your fuel economy will be. If you go for an out right maximum power output and drive it as so, you can expect to see it decrease as it would without the map. If you get the map to increase torque low down and drive conservatively then it is likely that fuel economy will increase.
Q. How will the remap affect the longevity of my engine?
A. The remap will obviously increase the power output of your vehicle and depending on how you drive depends on how reliable it is for you. If you drive it harder then naturally you can expect to decrease the life of your engine but likewise if you thrashed it without even having it mapped then you would expect this to be the case anyway. The remap does not in any way stress the engine so the remap itself does not affect the longevity, only your driving style.
Q. Can it be reversed?
A. The beauty of the remap is that this process is completely reversible without any trace, at a cost of £50.00
Q. How much will it cost?
A. See our main page for the starting prices for your size of engine. Depending on your requirements depends on what the cost will be for the remap so give us a ring or email us with your vehicle details on our contact page for a friendly no obligation quote.
Q. I have other modifications...
A. Let us know in advance the modifications you have.
Q. I intend to make further modifications...
A. Again, let us know what your planning so we can advise the best way forward and can even offer great package deals on other performance upgrades.
Q. Is remapping better then chipping?
A. OBD remapping is the modern technique replacing chipping. It reads and writes on your ECU via the OBD port and does not invalidate warranties. This is not a resistor that fools your ECU, it is the genuine article.
Q. What if I want to sell my car?
A. If you wish to sell the car with the map on then no problem, if you wish to have it reversed back to standard after a period of time then again no problem, we charge £50 to reverse the map back to standard.
Q. What about my insurance?
A. This is up to you. We have to advise that you inform your insurance companies that the remap has been carried out but as there is no way for them to read this map, it is up to you what you do. It is your responsibility.
Q. What warranty do you give?
A. As we change nothing on your car other than a software map, there is nothing for us to give a warranty on. If for some obscure reason you suffer a software problem, we will do our utmost to help you including returning your car to standard for any testing.
Q. Will I lose the remap if I disconnect the battery?
A. The remap is a software change hard written to the ecu. This means that if you disconnect your battery you will not lose the remap itself.
